ABOUT THE SCHOOL
School Type: Charter
Grades served: K-7
Enrollment: 689
School Rating: 1+
CORE PROBLEM
We have a large number of scholars who perform below grade level on the reading NWEA (last year 66% of our scholars met grade-level proficiency), and reading scores somewhat drop vertically where our kindergarten scholars scored at the 90%, while 1st graders scored at the 84th, and 2nd graders scored at the 57th…5th scored at the 50th, etc.
INNOVATION
An After School Academy program that provides targeted small group instruction through an excellent educator as well as through an online strategic program (Compass Learning) in order to significantly increase NWEA scores.
KEY LEARNING
Based on everything we learned from Summer Academy and two rounds of ASA, we believe the idea is right (small group targeted instruction with a teacher in addition to time and access to Compass Learning). We saw positive results in terms of NWEA scores as well as scholars self-reported level of comfort in class and on tests. However, we realized that changes need to happen in order to affect a greater number of scholars and to make it sustainable for teachers. The ASA model will move to the school day and will be called WIN…. It will be more sustainable for teachers because with more teachers they will be able to collaborate for planning, and the time is during the school day instead of an additional three hours at school every week.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Hours input by team: Not reported
- Students impacted: 120
- Additional educators impacted: 15
- Community members: 120+
STUDENT GROWTH
- Positive results in NWEA scores in reading (the first round of ASA) and reading and math (the second round of ASA)
- Scholar belief that lessons are appropriate and challenging through surveys
- Scholar comfort with grade level content (through their tier 1 daily instruction) and the NWEA assessment measured through surveys
PLANS TO SCALE
This summer Rowe will again host Summer Academy. The ASA model will move to the school day and will be called WIN. The structure is slightly different but the major parts will remain. It will also be a time for all scholars instead of less than 10%. It will be more sustainable for teachers because with more teachers they will be able to collaborate for planning, and the time is during the school day instead of an additional three hours at school every week.
