PROBLEM STATEMENT

Not all students are independent readers by the end of first grade. 聽This is a problem because independent reading is a skill that is necessary to access the forthcoming material. 聽Literacy is the basis for all knowledge and is a key step in unlocking maximum student potential.

HOW MIGHT WE鈥�

Optimize shared reading opportunities to support the development of grade level comprehension skills by leveraging teachers鈥� autonomy over their literacy curriculum?

SOLUTION

Our 聽solution incorporates a product, service, and process. Our big idea is that 1st and 3rd grade teachers will effectively implement shared reading strategies that increase student engagement, joy, and proficiency in reading.

Product – Shared reading guide for teachers (Patrick Henry Shared Reading Toolkit) where they can also document feedback; lesson study materials.

Service – Initial PD, improved shared reading practices with students.

Process – PLC, student response/feedback, data cycle.
