PROBLEM STATEMENT
Not all students are independent readers by the end of first grade. This is a problem because independent reading is a skill that is necessary to access the forthcoming material. Literacy is the basis for all knowledge and is a key step in unlocking maximum student potential.
HOW MIGHT WE…
Optimize shared reading opportunities to support the development of grade level comprehension skills by leveraging teachers’ autonomy over their literacy curriculum?
SOLUTION
Our solution incorporates a product, service, and process. Our big idea is that 1st and 3rd grade teachers will effectively implement shared reading strategies that increase student engagement, joy, and proficiency in reading.
Product – Shared reading guide for teachers (Patrick Henry Shared Reading Toolkit) where they can also document feedback; lesson study materials.
Service – Initial PD, improved shared reading practices with students.
Process – PLC, student response/feedback, data cycle.
